Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment method for joint pain and shoulder pain caused by overuse or repetitive stress. At Merivale Chiropractic and Massage Clinic, our team specialises in treating sports injuries with shockwave therapy in Ottawa, Canada. Shockwave therapy may help your injury is heal faster so you’re less likely to experience complications, reinjury, or chronic pain.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

Shockwave therapy is administered with a small, handheld device that creates high-energy acoustic waves that penetrate deep within your tissues and muscles. As the body absorbs this energy, it stimulates blood flow, causes localised inflammation, jump-starts the body’s natural healing processes, and improves tissue and cell regeneration. It is a targeted therapy that only affects the injured or damaged areas.

Conditions We Commonly See With Shockwave Therapy

We commonly use shockwave therapy to treat repetitive stress injuries, overuse injuries, and sports injuries, such as:

  • Tendinopathy
  • Tendinitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • ITBS
  • Medial tibial stress syndrome
  • Heel spurs
  • Golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow
  • Runner's knee

Are You a Good Candidate for Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a safe, effective treatment option for most people. However, we don’t recommend shockwave therapy for patients who:

  • Have a nerve disorder
  • Have a blood clotting disorder
  • Are pregnant
  • Have bone cancer or are in remission
  • Have an infection in the treatment area
  • Have metal pins or plates in the treatment area
  • Have undergone a steroid injection in the last 12 weeks
  • Have taken an anti-inflammatory painkiller like ibuprofen recently.

What to Expect During and After Shockwave Therapy

When you visit us for shockwave therapy, you can remain fully clothed other than the area being treated. We will use a handheld device that is connected to a machine. The machine converts compressed air into acoustic sound waves. We will apply ultrasound gel to the treatment areas and gently press the device to the targeted areas. You might feel pressure and slight pain or tenderness during the procedure, but as soon as the procedure is over you should not experience any negative side effects. The treatment only lasts a few minutes, and you can return to your regular routine immediately afterwards, though you should avoid high-impact exercise. Most people experience results in three to six sessions.
